Is my old Wii worth money?
A great many Wii consoles were made, so a plain one usually sells for little. What adds value: the first model that also plays GameCube games, original Wii Remotes, and complete boxed bundles.
Which Wii do you have?
| Model | Years | How to tell |
|---|---|---|
| RVL-001 | 2006 | Stands upright; GameCube controller ports and memory card slots. |
| RVL-101 (Family Edition) | 2011 | Lies flat; no GameCube ports, does not play GameCube games. |
| Wii mini, RVL-201 | 2012 (Canada first) | Small, top-loading; no internet, no SD card, no GameCube. |
The model number is on the label of the console. Nintendo also lists the serial: LU or LB for RVL-001, KU or KB for RVL-101, HW for the Wii mini.

Red flags
- A missing sensor bar or power supply.
- "Disc won't eject" or "won't read discs".
- Third-party remotes sold as originals.
Good to know about the Wii
- Connect it to today's TV: the Wii AV cable has three plugs (yellow, white and red). For a sharper picture, a component cable (sold separately) plugs into the same port at the back; then turn on progressive scan if your TV offers it. Many recent TVs have no input for these plugs and need an adapter.
- The Wii mini works only with the AV cable packed with it, and has no component output.
- GameCube games: the RVL-001 plays GameCube discs and takes GameCube controllers and memory cards. The Game Boy Player add-on does not work on any Wii.
- The Wii Remote Plus, sold from 2010, has the MotionPlus sensor built in.
- The Wii Shop Channel closed on January 30, 2019, and online play for Wii games (Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection) ended on May 20, 2014.
