Is my PlayStation 2 worth money?

Working PlayStation 2 consoles still sell, because people want to play the games on the real machine. The model number on the label tells you which version you have; a tested console with its controller, memory card and cables is what buyers look for.

Which PS2 do you have?

The model number starts with SCPH and is printed on the label under the console. The last two digits are the region: 01 means North America (for example SCPH-90001).

What adds value

Tick what applies to yours:

Tested: it reads discs and shows a picture, ideally with a photo of a game on screen.
An original Sony controller and memory card, with the power cord and AV cable.
The box and manuals, and limited editions or less common colors.
A fat model with its original network adapter in the expansion bay.

Red flags

"Disc read error" or "won't read discs": the laser or the drive is worn.
No picture with the cable included: ask for a photo of the console running.
"Modded" or "chipped": opened and changed; some buyers want it, many avoid it.

Good to know about the PS2

Games are region-coded: a North American console (model number ending in 01) plays North American discs. A Japanese console (ending in 00) or a European one (03, 04) expects its own region's games.
The SCPH-70000 slim was the first with a network port built in; the fat models need the network adapter in the expansion bay to go online.
Older consoles plug in with composite cables (yellow, white and red). Many recent TVs have no input for them and need an adapter.
A PS2 also plays original PlayStation games, and DVD films and audio CDs.
PS2 games save on the PS2 memory card, which holds 8 MB; PS1 games save on an original PlayStation card.
About 160 million were sold, the best-selling console of all time: plain consoles are easy to find, so condition and what comes with it make the difference.
The DualShock 2 controller has pressure-sensitive buttons; check that every button and both sticks answer.

A few PS2 consoles listed now, United States, from $30. Asking prices, not sold prices: the price a console actually sells for can be lower.
