Is my PSP worth money?
The PSP is one of the most wanted retro handhelds: it plays its games on small UMD discs, and many people buy one again for those games. Five models exist; the battery and the screen decide most of the price.
Which PSP do you have?
| Model | Years | How to tell |
|---|---|---|
| PSP-1000 | 2005 in North America | The thickest and heaviest; the only one with an infrared port. |
| PSP-2000 (Slim and Lite) | 2007 | Lighter and slimmer; adds video out to a TV. |
| PSP-3000 | 2008 | Brighter screen; looks like the 2000. |
| PSP Go (PSP-N1000) | 2009 | Small, with a sliding screen and 16 GB inside; no UMD drive. |
| PSP Street (PSP-E1000) | 2011 | Sold in Europe and other PAL countries only. |
The model number (PSP-1000, 2000, 3000, N1000 or E1000 series) is on the label of the console. Without it: an infrared port means a 1000; no UMD door means a PSP Go.

Red flags
- A battery that is swollen or bulging under the back cover: never charge it.
- "UMD door broken" or "won't read UMD": the drive is the part that wears first.
- Sold "as is" without a battery: it may simply not power on.
Good to know about the PSP
- Weight tells the first models apart: about 280 g for a PSP-1000, 189 g for a 2000 or 3000, and 158 g for a PSP Go.
- The PSP Go keeps its games on 16 GB of memory inside: it has no UMD drive, so it cannot play the discs.
- On a PSP-3000, faint lines can show on the screen up close: that comes from the panel's design, not a defect.
- The PSP Street (E1000) was sold only in Europe and other PAL countries.
- Games come on UMD discs, about 6 cm wide and holding up to 1.8 GB. Films were sold on UMD too (UMD Video).
- Saved games and downloads go on a Memory Stick PRO Duo on the PSP-1000, 2000 and 3000: check that one is included.
- More than 80 million PSPs were sold. Sales ended in North America in January 2014 and in Japan in June 2014, so every PSP on sale now is used.
