How much are old Hot Wheels worth?

Early cars with red-striped tires are the collectors' target. Loose, played-with cars from the 1990s onward usually sell for about a dollar or two each.

What to look for

Check what applies to yours:

• 'Redline' cars: a red stripe on the tire wall, made from 1968 to 1977.
• Cars still in their original, unopened package.
• 'Treasure Hunt' editions, marked with a special logo on the card.
• Original paint with few chips.

Before you sell

• Compare with items that actually sold, not only with asking prices.
• Take clear photos in daylight: front, back, marks and any damage.
• Do not clean coins, and do not repaint or polish old items: it often lowers the value.
• For anything that might be valuable, get an opinion from a certified appraiser or a specialist dealer.
