How much are gold coins worth?

Real gold coins are worth at least their gold; fakes and gold-colored tokens are common. Gold-colored commemorative tokens and plated replicas are worth little.

• U.S. gold coins struck for circulation before 1933, and modern bullion coins like the American Gold Eagle.
• Weight and size that match the official specifications; a coin dealer can test it.
• Rare dates and condition, which can add far more than the gold value.

Before you sell

• Compare with items that actually sold, not only with asking prices.
• Take clear photos in daylight: front, back, marks and any damage.
• Do not clean coins, and do not repaint or polish old items: it often lowers the value.
• For anything that might be valuable, get an opinion from a certified appraiser or a specialist dealer.
