Which dollar bills are worth money?

Most bills are worth face value; star notes, old series and unusual serial numbers are the exceptions. Circulated modern bills with ordinary serial numbers are worth face value.

What to look for

Check what applies to yours:

• A small star next to the serial number marks a replacement note (a star note).
• Older silver certificates have a blue seal and blue serial numbers.
• Unusual serial numbers: very low numbers, repeating digits or numbers that read the same both ways.
• Crisp, uncirculated condition.

Before you sell

• Compare with items that actually sold, not only with asking prices.
• Take clear photos in daylight: front, back, marks and any damage.
• Do not clean coins, and do not repaint or polish old items: it often lowers the value.
• For anything that might be valuable, get an opinion from a certified appraiser or a specialist dealer.
