Are foreign coins worth money?

Most foreign coins brought home from trips are common; older silver coins and rare dates stand out. Recent circulated foreign coins are usually sold by the pound for small amounts.

Check what applies to yours:

• Older silver coins: for example, Canadian coins dated 1966 or earlier contain 80 percent silver.
• Coins from countries or years with small mintages.
• Condition and sets in original packaging.

Before you sell

• Compare with items that actually sold, not only with asking prices.
• Take clear photos in daylight: front, back, marks and any damage.
• Do not clean coins, and do not repaint or polish old items: it often lowers the value.
• For anything that might be valuable, get an opinion from a certified appraiser or a specialist dealer.
