How much is old cast iron worth?

Look under the pan: some old foundry marks are collected. Unmarked or recent pans usually sell for about what a new one costs, or less.

• A maker's mark on the bottom; some old American foundries are collected.
• A smooth, polished cooking surface is typical of older pans.
• No cracks, no warping (the pan sits flat), and the size number on the handle side.

Before you sell

• Compare with items that actually sold, not only with asking prices.
• Take clear photos in daylight: front, back, marks and any damage.
• Do not clean coins, and do not repaint or polish old items: it often lowers the value.
• For anything that might be valuable, get an opinion from a certified appraiser or a specialist dealer.
