Are antique lamps worth money?

Glass shades, bronze bases and maker signatures add value; reproductions are common. Reproductions and common table lamps usually sell for modest amounts.

What to look for

Check what applies to yours:

• A maker's signature or mark on the base or the shade.
• Reverse-painted or leaded glass shades in good condition.
• Original wiring and parts; many famous names have been widely copied.

Before you sell

• Compare with items that actually sold, not only with asking prices.
• Take clear photos in daylight: front, back, marks and any damage.
• Do not clean coins, and do not repaint or polish old items: it often lowers the value.
• For anything that might be valuable, get an opinion from a certified appraiser or a specialist dealer.
